The MSc portfolio within our Energy & Power programme has recently been reviewed. This is to ensure that the courses are attractive to prospective students and to make sure that the courses titles and student learning outcomes are relevant to future employers. As a result of the review we are launching new course titles, reorganising and renaming some courses and withdrawing others.

As conventional sources of natural gas dwindle, producers are turning to sources such as shale gas and biogas. This presents an opportunity to extend the lifetime of the production of affordable low carbon heat and power from gas.

This course explores the role of energy supply from gas in the UK and abroad, both in terms of its use as an energy source and an economic driver.

Major challenges exist with respect to production/extraction technologies, costs, environmental impacts and regulations. This course considers issues relating to extraction, production and transmission of gas, and explores the broader aspects of gas-based energy systems – carbon capture and storage, process safety and the policy implications.

Graduates can expect to be employed by producers and distributors of natural gas, energy companies and the financial sector dealing with natural gas, in technical, consultancy and management roles.

The MSc course comprises eight assessed modules, an integrated group project and an individual project.
