Biomedical Science is the in-depth study of human biology in both normal and disease states. It provides an understanding of the causes of human disease, including viral and microbial agents, and the effects of disease on the structure and function of human cells and tissues. The methods used in the study of human diseases, such as cancer, malaria, heart disease etc., are also explored; as well as current and experimental treatments.
Teaching on the course involves staff of international research standing. As such, the course will include the most up-todate information and a focus on the latest research findings, techniques and cutting-edge practice. An optional intercalated year can often be taken, prior to the final year. This can be spent in an NHS, industrial or research laboratory.
The first two years are studied by all students. In the final year at least half the time you specialise in one of five major options: Cancer Biology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Cell Biology, Medical Microbiology or Haematology (where funding requires a specific specialism, please contact the School). Students also complete a substantial research project. The course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).

The Biomedical Science course offers plenty of hands-on laboratory experience during your studies, and many students choose to use the experience gained in the first and second years to work in an industrial or research laboratory, although this is not a requirement of the course. This optional year outside the University (referred to as an intercalated year) gives you the opportunity to explore a particular career and gain valuable laboratory experience. This optional year out gives a maturity which helps you tackle your final year with a greater motivation, giving you more confidence in your studies. This may improve your chances of obtaining a good degree, and may make it easier for you to enter your preferred career.
Graduates from this course have a good grounding in scientific knowledge, research methodology and practical skills, and if you complete the IBMS portfolio you can become a Biomedical Science Practitioner.
Graduates are employed in an extremely wide range of careers, some of which use their scientific knowledge either outside, or within, a laboratory. You can apply your specialist skills and knowledge towards research in either medical or industrial research organisations (such as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies), or universities and research institutes. Openings exist in the NHS, public health, pathology laboratories, forensic science laboratories, the pharmaceutical industry, and food manufacture.
Graduates are well placed when applying to study for an MSc, MPhil or PhD and in their future scientific research careers. Other graduates have pursued additional degrees in areas such as Medicine or Dentistry. Previous graduates have also decided to continue their studies, by enrolling on a teacher training course.
