Interview required: Yes. Interviews will take place at De Montfort University; these will include numeracy and literacy tests. Professional conduct during the event will also contribute to the decision making regarding an applicant’s application. The recruitment process for this course includes assessing applicants by the content of their personal statement and interview for the core values of the NHS constitution. Work experience: Yes, minimum of 6 months. Evidence of study in the last five years is required. |

Overview
A unique role in healthcare often described as ‘privileged’, being a midwife carries a lot of responsibility, is demanding but also brings a lot of satisfaction. During the course you will learn to communicate and work with women from all reaches of society, striving to promote their health at all times while recognising your important role to women at each stage of maternity.
Midwives are the lead professional for all healthy women with straightforward pregnancies. For women with complex pregnancies they work as the key coordinator of care within the multidisciplinary team, liaising closely with obstetricians, general practitioners, health visitors/public health practitioners and maternity support workers/maternity care assistants.
Midwives have an increasingly greater public health role aiming to meet the challenges of reducing inequalities and improving maternal and family health midwifery education, whilst rooted in normality prepares midwives to care for all women including those with complex medical, obstetric and social needs. It prepares and develops midwives to be skilled and safe, empathic and trustworthy, developing skills of autonomy and accountability within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams.

Career opportunities
The course enables you to practice and be entered on the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s register in the UK. Midwives can then apply to work in the EU as well as commonwealth countries such as Canada and Australia (subject to country-specific criterion).
